Human trafficking - a world wide issue

Type the words, " human trafficking stories" into Google and you'll get pages of real life stories about girls and women who have gone through horrific experiences. The word, human trafficking can be defined as, "the illegal trade of human beings for the purpose of reproductive slavery, commercial sexual exploitation, forced labour, or a modern-day form of slavery."

A blog was created for people to share stories of this nature so that other girls and women could realise the seriousness of the issue and try to protect themselves from these human trafficking predators. Online newspapers are also rife with human trafficking statistics and stories.  An estimated 700000 to 4 million people around the world are being trafficked for labor and sexual exploitation each year.

In South Africa, the situation is not much different. We have stories of our own that would make any woman or girl shudder at the thought. Human trafficking victims are forced to become prostitutes and are often forced to use drugs since the predators know that the drugs will keep these girls as their slaves.

When girls are rescued it can only be seen as a miracle since many of the trafficking rings have been doing this for so long and have connections in all the right places.

To protect yourself from such slavery there are a few tips:

My big fat BIG dream

What do you dream about? A big house and expensive car? The dream job? The perfect husband?

My BIG dream is quite simple. I want to be happy and hopefully leave a legacy. I've been thinking about travelling lately and what i'll do when the superficial world of PR isnt enough for me anymore... I've been thinking about how i can help people and how that is what would make me happy.

My BIG dream is to one day open a haven for orphans and children who are abused and neglected or just need a safe place to be loved. I've realised that the world i live in isn't enough. Its a world where people ignore the fact that there are children who need nurturing and love and just go on with their daily lives. I don't want to be Mother Theresa, but living only for myself could eventually turn me into that girl i don't want to be. The PR lady who pretends to care and gives a fake reassuring smile to staff as she walks by in branded shoes and a bag that costs as much as it would take to feed a small country.

My BIG dream is to be happy and this is what would make me happy. I'm still young and have quite a few years to decide what it is i really need, but i do know that it would be something much greater than money.

That's my BIG fat dream.

Conventional is a good fall back position isn't it?

Conforming or adhering to accepted standards. Ordinary rather than different or original. This is what the term conventional can be defined as.

Conventional is a good fall back position isn't it? Well of course it is. Its comfortable and convenient and heaven knows that's what people love. Not pushing boundaries, not trying new things or not being different. What would the world come to if we all had to act differently, or if we didn't conform to what was perceived as normal?

The world would be okay strangely enough. We were born to be different, we're not meant to conform to the usual or to what is comfortable. Imagine if people had to conform when inventions were being discovered. Rules were broken and this is why we sit at the point we are at today.

We are all meant to ask questions or to explore things and not just accept what we are told. How boring it would be if we had to be conventional. So, go out into the world and explore, be different and maybe even discover new things.

The "gees" of a World Cup

With the Rugby World cup currently taking place in New Zealand and hopeful fans right around the world, what does South Africa have that's just so special that would make us defeat the other teams and win the Cup?

There's a little thing we realised we own when the soccer world cup came to South Africa. That soulful energy in each of our hearts and hope for a better future, that when blasted collectively through an instrument called the vuvuzela equals to GEES! This is what makes us different to all the other hopeful fans.

Amazingly we come together to create an image of one nation even though we know this isn't completely true. We have faults, issues and hurdles that we have to overcome... yet when there's a cup to be won, we are a collective spirit. The leader of this spirit obviously being our ex-President Nelson Mandela.

This blog is just a little reminder to keep that Gees in your heart even after the World Cup has gone. Never lose sight of the goal. Right now that goal is the Rugby World Cup, but tomorrow it may be creating a nation that all otherS can look at and say, "We'd like to be like them." We must show the world what it takes to be the best. We must prove that together we are the best.

Lastly, I'd like to say... Go Bokke! whooooo!!!!

:-)
